How is the curriculum schedule organized?
Our curriculum is 36 weeks long, broken into three 12-week trimesters. Each week includes a description of the weekly unit and goals, a weekly view calendar, and a list of materials you will need for the week, organized by day. Helpful buttons and navigation links are provided to expand on each day’s lesson plan. Click below for a sneak peek of Week 1/Day 1!
You can easily navigate to each day with a more thorough daily description. We provide embedded videos for the recommended books (when available), 2-3 activities each day based on the book and/or unit, and additional media or sensory activities. Use the daily lesson plan as a guide with activity #1 as a base for the day. Add on additional activities as desired. If you only have 20 minutes that day, that’s fine! Make each day your own while using this as a solid foundation for everything you need.
How much prep time is involved per week/day?
We wrote the curriculum keeping in mind that a working parent, caregiver, or nanny might be leading the activities. We’ve focused on child-led activities, meaning we want to see how the child interacts with the materials we give them. You should only need to gather the materials the night before or on the morning of. Setup and cleanup should take only about 5 minutes. The time spent on a day of lessons and activities is entirely up to you and could be 30min to 3hrs!
We’ll give you an example… Week One of the ECC Curriculum covers the five senses and the letter Aa. On Monday, there is a storybook, a movement video, a literacy activity connected to the letter of the week and an arts and craft activity connected to the book. You can do one or all of these activities, based on the needs of your child. The literacy activity builds the letter of the week using colorful construction paper, tissue, and glue. Directions and a photo sample are provided.
We also provide a list of all materials needed with links to where to buy as well as a weekly reading list of book titles if you want hard copies to read (instead of – or in addition to – the videos provided).
If you’d like to receive all of the materials you will need in a monthly box shipped to you, purchase one here!
Do I really need my computer to use the curriculum?
While the ECC curriculum is exclusively held on this website, it is not necessary to use the computer everyday to follow the lessons. In fact, the computer could really only be used for the directions. Once you read through them, you may not need it anymore since the activities are hands-on. As you get more comfortable with the weekly format, you’ll depend on the computer less to guide you through sections like the daily “morning welcome” or “review: comprehension & gratitude”. Embedded videos and links are purely supplemental and can be used at your discretion. The videos for readings are provided so that you don’t have to go out and buy/rent so many books – but if you have the book already, go ahead and skip the video! Just be sure to check out “questions to ask before/during/after reading the book” described in your daily lesson plan.
Do you have instructions for the parents to teach and do the art/activities?
We write clear simple directions for the parents or caregiver to lead the activities the way a teacher would. Visual examples are also included in the majority of the projects and sensory activities. We suggest several questions to ask the children to spark reflection, critical thinking and general reading comprehension. And for the majority of the picture books we recommend, we provide YouTube links to readings so that you don’t have to go out and buy/rent so many books!
I have more questions!
